Suite “Folk Tunes”
Folk Tunes is a suite for English horn and guitar inspired by melodic material and stylistic elements of Western Ukrainian folk tradition.
The project documents the studio recording of the work in collaboration with English horn player Khrystyna Korchynska.
About the project
Folk Tunes is a suite for English horn and guitar inspired by the atmosphere, contour, and expressive character of Western Ukrainian folk tradition. Rather than quoting existing melodies directly, the work develops an original musical language shaped by folk-like intonation, rhythmic vitality, and subtle variations of colour.
The cycle consists of three movements — Carol, Song, and Haivka — each reflecting a distinct expressive sphere. The music moves between lyrical introspection, song-like simplicity, and dance-driven energy, while maintaining a chamber dialogue between the two instruments.
The recording project was realised in collaboration with English horn player Khrystyna Korchynska and recorded on 16 May 2025 at Zwaluwhoeve. The session focused on balance, phrasing, and timbral clarity, highlighting the refined interaction between English horn and guitar.
