Oleg Boyko is a composer and classical guitarist based in Brussels. His work spans contemporary concert music, chamber repertoire, and educational projects, combining performance and composition with close collaboration across various instruments.

His catalogue includes original works and arrangements for solo guitar, chamber ensembles, and mixed instrumental groups. He also dedicates a significant part of his work to pedagogical repertoire for music education.

As a guitarist and composer, he focuses on the role of the classical guitar in contemporary chamber music. He explores how the instrument can act as an integrated partner in ensemble dialogue and balance, rather than just a solo voice.

Background

Performance, composition and teaching

Oleg holds a Master of Music in Classical Guitar Performance from the National Music Academy of Ukraine in Kyiv. His career includes solo appearances with orchestras, chamber collaborations, and various recordings. He has won first prizes at international guitar competitions in Frankfurt, Prague, and Alexandria, and his compositions have been recognized by the Baltic Guitar Festival and the Dutch Guitar Foundation. In addition to his creative work, he has extensive teaching experience, including twenty years at the Chernihiv Higher Music College, and currently teaches at music academies in Brussels.

Concerto for Guitar and Chamber Orchestra, premiered in Seattle by Mark Hilliard Wilson and The Sound Ensemble; Murals of Ancient Places for Hessisches Zupforchester; Suite "Folk Tunes" for English horn and guitar.

Artistic collaborations include Mare Duo, Swedish Guitar-Harp Duo, Hessisches Zupforchester and chamber projects with wind, string and plucked-string performers.

Recordings and projects

Recordings include Arabesque, Graffiti and chamber music with violin, flute and other instruments. Graffiti is a multimedia artistic project combining music and visual art.

Current Focus

The guitar as a chamber voice

My recent work focuses on expanding the chamber repertoire for classical guitar. Through new compositions and collaborations, I explore the instrument’s role as a structural voice within an ensemble. This research is continued through the Chamber Guitar Project, developed as part of my postgraduate work at the Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel.
