Guitar & Oboe

Cello and guitar chamber work
Guitar · Oboe 2025 Approx. 12 min

This suite explores the timbral relationship between the oboe and guitar, balancing the oboe’s lyrical flexibility with the guitar’s rhythmic and harmonic structure. The work moves between structured ensemble interaction and rhapsodic passages, using syncopated textures to drive the suite’s momentum. The focus remains on establishing a balanced dialogue where the guitar functions as a structural partner to the wind instrument.

Overview

Suite of Ukrainian Household Music

This three-movement cycle integrates musical idioms and dance rhythms from Western Ukraine into a contemporary chamber dialogue. The work does not use direct quotes, but rather incorporates regional modal intonations and rhythmic structures to explore the interaction between the oboe and guitar.

The suite opens with "Walk Around," a dance-based movement featuring a recurring theme with accelerating iterations and cadenza-like episodes. The second movement, "Lullaby," provides a lyrical contrast, focusing on the dialogue between improvisational oboe lines and resonant guitar textures. The cycle concludes with "Arkan & Kolomyyka," which combines two traditional Hutsul dance forms in an energetic finale centered on rhythmic coordination and virtuosity.

As part of the Chamber Guitar Project, this suite serves as a practical environment for testing the acoustic balance between the wind instrument’s sustained lyrical sound and the guitar’s articulated resonance.
